Ocean Princess Report - Week of June 17th

This week on the Ocean Princess we saw a slow start with lots of little seabass, most filled with roe. The spawn must be getting near. Later in the week, fishing improved with some real nice size bass coming over the rails. Seabass to 3 lbs were caught, we also saw our first trigger fish of the year on friday! Again today, we caught a few more - this is really early for the
trigger fish, we usually don’t see them till july.

Ocean Princess Report - Week of June 10th

This week with all the storm surge and such, fishing was a little off from last week - however fishing was still very good for tog. Many over 8 lbs came over the rail including a 12 pounder caught by a 13 year old young lady from Baltimore. The first time she has ever been fishing in the ocean. Several nice seabass were also caught, although the mass numbers we saw last week did drop some. Hop over to my website for updated pictures:

Fishing With Boog Powell

Capt. JW, Boog Powell, and Capt. Skip took a Sea Bass, Flounder and Tog trip on Wednesday June 6^th. It was Boog’s first trip of the year, and his first ever trip on Capt. JW’s newly re-powered and customized Mako.

Our game plan targeted the Delaware Artificial Reef System. We started at reef site #10 fishing various large concrete and rubble piles. The tog were uncooperative with only a few small fish caught, the same story on sea bass. Afer site #10 we headed out to the “B” Bouy area in the shipping channel, we usually have decent luck there, but not today. The drift was really screwy. We didn’t even see the usual suspects fishing there (headboats). The boats that were fishing, were concentrating on Shark, although we didn’t see any caught or hooked up.

The last trick up our sleeve was site #11, the “redbird”subway cars. This is a tremendous resource, and one of Capt. JW’s favorite places to fish. Right away we started picking up some nice Sea Bass and Boog caught the only flounder of the day, a decent 20.5 inch flattie. We were only able to fish for about an hour because the conditions. The forecast called for the wind to shift and diminish. She shifted and started blowing pretty good, we decided that being 26 miles from the OC sea buoy in that kind of wind was a little sketchy, and we made the run home. We encountered some “refreshing” winds estimated at 30kts or more! We made it safely back to Sunset Marina with a couple dozen fish, and had a delicious fish fry for dinner.

As of this trip we still haven’t seen the quantities or quality of Sea Bass that we are used to in May and June, I’m sure many good trips are to come.

Full Moon/Half-Bite

Capt. JW Powell fished with “Cork Bar” Billy Wilkins and Richard Hastings of Ocean City at the OC artificial reefs on Wednesday 5/30. The sea conditions were perfect, a light breeze and 1-2ft waves, we set a world speed record getting to the African Queen reef!

Billy Wilkins broke the ice with a beautiful 3lb-17 ½ inch “Bluehead” Sea Bass and we caught several more nice keepers, with a 22 inch-5lb 2oz Flounder to round out the box.

We are anticipating that Sea Bass will show up in significant numbers at these reefs very soon, however, it hasn’t happened yet. We marked more fish than last week and had lots of small fish bites; overall though, the action was less than spectacular.

After the Queen, we “raced” toward OC and made a guest appearance at Russell’s Reef for a little “Toggin”. The group made a valiant effort, the fish weren’t cooperating! It may have been the full moon! Only 7 tog were caught, 3 were keepers. Billy Wilkins caught the largest weighing 5lbs-5ozs.

Sorry no pictures…It was a last minute trip and Capt. JW left his camera, sunscreen and sub sandwich at home. Guess which of those he didn’t actually need!

Afternoon update - big flattie

Our old friend Jack Kosloski of West Ocean City was out “floundering” about as he has all week.

Jack has limited out on flounder numerous times this past week; although the wind has been a little pesky, the water in the bay is fairly clear. We’re hearing lots of good flounder reports, with some nice big fish. Here is Jack showing off his beauty, a nice 28″ that weighed 9lb. 12oz.

Rockfish, keepers too!

Friday was sunny, windy and cool with a stiff SE ocean-breeze. Conditions were a little tough, but the fish were hungry and didn’t give a care about our comfort. The prophecy of bigger Rockfish came true today…

Capt. Skip’s charter had a blast today catching and releasing over 33 rockfish, with 4 nice keepers. The angler’s were Joel and Amy Grube of Lancaster, PA, along with Carl & Lori Strickler, also of Lancaster. Amy took the big fish honors with a nice 38-incher, Carl had the second largest with a stout 36″, both fish weighed in right at 17lbs. Everyone caught lots of fish and had a blast! This gang has “Striper Fever” and will be fishing again with Capt Skip on Saturday 5/26.

Fishing Update - Rockfish!

Memorial Day weekend is coming and the weather is shaping up. Capt. Skip went for a shakedown cruise with his new mate JD Baker on Thursday 5/24. The boat is running great and there are lots of fish showing up on the bottom finder. The fishing was spectacular! Over 30 Stripers (Rockfish) were caught and released. The largest fish was 25″ with the smallest in the 14″ range, those little buggers were hungry! No keepers, but, we had lots of fun. We have a feeling the bigger fish aren’t far behind. Stay tuned.

Capt. J.W. Powell and his crew experienced another productive day of bottom fishing on the Ocean City artificial reef system.

The group today included our friend Wayne Hartman from Ocean City, his step-father Lefty “Hotlips” Merling (86) of Baltimore, and his brother In-law John Stewart from Ocean View, DE. The weather was beautiful early in the day, but the gang started late as Capt. J.W. was ironing out some performance problems on the recently re-powered 261 Mako. (more…)

Ocean Princess Report

This week on the Ocean Princess we saw good trips for seabass to 4lbs with people on Friday and Saturday close to limits - we also saw some nice tog, all the way to 13 lbs. On Sunday, we had our first flounder of the year (23 inches) and also for the first time this year, everyone on the boat had their limit of seabass. Dogfish are still being pests and keep us moving around, but fishing is really starting to improve.

We start 1/2 day fishing this coming Saturday.

We fished offshore today in a terrible fog. It wasn’t the greatest day, but we caught some nice fish. Most boats didn’t even leave the dock! There was large swell generated by the coastal low pressure system that hammered the lower SE states, other than that, the sea conditions were beautiful! We fished the “Russell’s” and “African Queen” artificial reefs off of Ocean City. The water was still a little murky green which limited visibility. We caught and released many hungry Tautog on the “Russell’s Reef” with 7 nice keepers in the 4-6lb range. (more…)
